Articles in German: 5 traps on DTZ B1 + methods that really work

There are things in the German language that just won’t let you be. Articles — der, die, das — are one of them. People study them for weeks, make flashcards, repeat to boredom — and still make the same mistakes on the exam.

Not because they know the language poorly. But because they don’t understand where exactly the system “breaks” and why the brain substitutes the wrong article even when you “know” the correct one.

On DTZ B1, articles affect several criteria at once: Korrektheit in Schreiben, Korrektheit in Sprechen, and even text comprehension in Lesen — because the article signals the case and the role of the word in the sentence.

In this article, we will analyze five specific traps, a memorization method using colors and suffixes, and three exercises for self-checking.

Why articles are not just a “rule”

In Ukrainian or Polish, the gender of a noun is often felt intuitively. In Turkish and Arabic, there are no articles at all.

Therefore, for most migrants, articles are a new category of thinking.

But here is the good news: gender in German is often predictable.

Interesting fact:
About 70% of article mistakes come from 30–40 words.
